After submitting my application for a trainee at Harris Kyriakides, I was invited in an initial interview from the HR department and, thereafter, a further interview in the presence of a partner of the firm.  I was delighted to receive an offer to be part of the trainee associate class, which I delightfully accepted.

I was given the opportunity to do half of my traineeship at the Commercial, Real Estate and Employment Advisory Department whereas the second half I was allocated to the Commercial, Real Estate and Employment Litigation Department. Although both the advisory and the litigation departments are engaged in the same areas of law, the day to day work is vastly different.

In the first part of my traineeship, I was engaged in the drafting and reviewing of different types of documents and agreements and I participated in virtual meetings which was the rule due to Covid-19. The firm maintains amazing technology infrastructure which allows smooth interaction with clients, real time co-working on documents, sharing information with clients, operation and maintenance of data rooms and use of specialised legal software.  At the second part of my traineeship, I spent several hours of the week in Court appearances and my daily schedule revolved around legal research and drafting court documents.

A day at the office would start at 8:30am, although I was always earlier in order to clean my inbox and organise my assignments for the day. Around 1pm there is a lunch break and the afternoon usually consisted of meetings with my supervisors to review my tasks and answer any questions on my assignments. In some afternoons I used to leave work early in order to attend the online live lectures held by the Cyprus Legal Council.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic during lockdowns which impacted the social life of the firm and networking with other trainees and associates, there were means to continue working remotely and be in constant communication with all team members, who were reachable whenever I needed assistance.

I am grateful to have been part of the traineeship program at Harris Kyriakides. I found the space to learn, I was given skills that would allow me to become the lawyer I have always aspired to be and I found real opportunities to grow.

Maria Kappai joined the firm as a Trainee Associate in 2020.  Her hard work, commitment and  eagerness to learn and develop, together with her successful results in the examinations of the Cyprus Legal Council, earned her an offer to stay at Harris Kyriakides as a Junior Associate.
