Cyprus introduces ERGANI platform to enhance employment transparency

Posted on 17 January 2025 | 3 mins read

The Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance in Cyprus has introduced a new decree requiring all employers to register the essential terms of employment for their employees in the ERGANI information system platform. This initiative aligns with the Transparent and Predictable Terms of Employment Law of 2023 (Law 25(I)/2023), aiming to strengthen transparency in employment practices. Employers must complete their registration in ERGANI by 28 February 2025.

What is the ERGANI platform?

The ERGANI platform is a digital tool designed to document and manage key employment information. It allows employers to report essential employment details, including hiring, terminations, and changes to working conditions. By enhancing transparency and ensuring compliance with employment legislation, the platform offers benefits to both employers and employees. The legal obligation to register employment details on ERGANI derives from Article 11 of the Transparent and Predictable Terms of Employment Law of 2023. The law applies to all employers and employees in Cyprus. For the purposes of this legislation, “employees” include individuals working under employment contracts, apprenticeship agreements, or other arrangements where an employer-employee relationship exists.

What needs to be registered?

Employers are required to input various employment details into the ERGANI platform. These include employer and employee identification information, job title and description, employee’s specialisation, employment start date, remuneration details, benefits and allowances (if applicable), and the employee’s working hours and weekly work schedule. It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure the information provided is accurate and up-to-date.

Deadlines for registration

The new obligation comes into effect on 20 December 2024, when the decree officially mandates compliance. Employers must submit the required employment information to the ERGANI platform during the registration window, which runs from 2 January 2025 to 28 February 2025.

Penalties for non-compliance

Non-compliance with the registration requirements may result in penalties under Article 27 of the Transparent and Predictable Terms of Employment Law of 2023. Since the obligation to register essential employment terms is based on Article 11, failure to meet the specified deadline could lead to fines or other legal consequences.

Conclusion

This new requirement underscores the government’s dedication to fostering transparency and predictability in employment relationships. Employers are encouraged to take proactive steps to meet the decree’s requirements and ensure timely registration of their employees in the ERGANI platform. Compliance with this initiative not only avoids penalties but also supports a fair and transparent working environment.
